Ian Doust - A True Story
In August 1993, Ian Doust was patrolling his parents' 150 hectare cattle ranch near Narooma, New South Wales. Australia when he fell off his motorbike and smashed his left leg. Apart from the intense pain his greatest worry was dying of exposure in the night time cold. He yelled for help but the area was too remote for anyone to hear. Then. just as lie was starting to get desperate. his dog Bob turned up, having, incredibly. picked up his cries from their farmhouse - a mile away. By chance Ian had a pen and paper and scrawled a note giving his location, and then tucked it into Bob's collar. Against all instincts the natural thing for a pooch to do when it sees someone in distress is to stay providing comfort and warmth the dog ran back for help, saving his master's life.

Wiltshire
Friendly Society
The
Wiltshire Friendly society started in 1828 is still in existence today. It is
basically a life insurance provider, although does offer other services, for
example sickness and accident cover. You could for example pay to the society contributions
to assure a weekly allowance of one shilling after having attained the age of
65. This allowed for the members to plan for their future. Several
Dowse names are found to have taken out policies and as we get details they will
be added here. The nice thing about these records, is that the policy holder had
to give date of birth and other information such as abode and occupation. Jemima
